Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: A blatantly transparent attempt to emulate Martin Scorsese, Lord of War falters. The movie comes across like a thin imitation and fails to create a compelling, consistent cinematic experience. Starring Nicolas Cage, Jared Leto. Lionsgate, $9.99, 6/27/2006.

64. The Red Shoes: Criterion Collection [Blu-Ray] (1948)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Like all Powell and Pressburger efforts, The Red Shoes boasts sumptuous visuals. Reviewed by David Williams/Colin Jacobson: With its lack of a traditional narrative, Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams will not prove effective for all. Those with an affinity for visual filmmaking should embrace this inventive effort, however. Directed by Akira Kurosawa. Warner, $39.95, 11/15/2016.

70. The Thief Of Bagdad: Criterion Collection (1940)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: I think there’s fun to be had from The Thief of Bagdad, and I can’t deny its influence. However, I just didn’t take a lot of pleasure from it. I enjoyed parts of the flick but felt bored by others; inconsistent pacing and plotting didn’t help its cause. Though I think this is a decent to good film, it doesn’t strike me as a classic.
