22. Rope (1948)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Most directors who attempt real time movies without obvious cuts would make their works unbearably stilted and pretentious. Alfred Hitchcock wasn’t “most directors”, though, so his use of unusual techniques in Rope does much to benefit the drama and little to harm it ... This ends up as a fine movie and DVD. Starring James Stewart, John Dall. Warner, $19

23. The Philadelphia Story: Special Edition (1940)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: The Philadelphia Story is a fun and witty flick that shows few serious flaws. I wasn’t wild about the abrupt ending, which presented a twist that seemed to exist simply for the sake of being unexpected, but otherwise it’s a solid and entertaining piece of work. Starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart. Warner, $26.99, 3/1/2005.

24. Rear Window: Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection (1954)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Although I was not born when Alfred Hitchcock created his greatest works - indeed, he only made three movies after my birth - I’ve been happy to check out his legacy on DVD, and 1954’s Rear Window stands with the best of his material. The film moves at a slow but compelling pace and uses simple methods to ensnare the viewer. Ultimately, it’s a very enter

25. Rear Window: Special Edition - Universal Legacy Series (1954)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: This marks the third DVD release of Rear Window, and it’s the best. However, it’s not significantly superior to those that preceded it. I think all three offer virtually identical picture and audio; this one differs from its predecessors solely due to a few new extras. While those components have value, they’re not enough to make the set worth a “double

26. The Greatest Show On Earth (Paramount Presents Edition) [Blu-Ray] (1952)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: In a year that saw the theatrical release of both High Noon and Singin’ In the Rain, The Greatest Show on Earth won the Oscar as Best Picture. However, even without that steep competition, it didn’t deserve the honor, or any honor, for that matter, as it’s a dull clunker that fails in almost all conceivable ways. Starring Charlton Heston, James Stewart

27. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: ... Mr. Smith Goes to Washington remains a very compelling and entertaining movie. Though not without its flaws, the film offers a stirring look at one man's battle against corruption and it deserves its lofty status among classic pictures. Starring James Stewart, Jean Arthur. Columbia TriStar, $27.95, 2/22/2000.

29. Vertigo: Collector's Edition (1958)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Vertigo definitely is effective, but something about it simply leaves me flat. Maybe it's because the film wasn't really what I expected. While it has some of those moments, it's not a really thrilling chiller ala Psycho. That's not bad, but even though I'd seen Vertigo years ago, I wasn't quite prepared for the route it would take. Starring James Stewar
