121. Dick Tracy [Blu-Ray] (1990)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Dick Tracy enjoys a reputation as a moderate dud, and frankly, it deserves it. While a moderately enjoyable flick, it remains more than a little bland and unmemorable; it has some entertaining moments but doesn’t make a strong impression. The Blu-ray gives us generally positive picture and excellent audio but lacks supplements. The absence of bonus mater

122. Petrified Forest [Blu-Ray] (1936)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: While its stars would all go on to greater glory in later endeavors, The Petrified Forest provides a satisfying flick. It meshes the romantic and gangster genres to create a lively and involving character drama. The Blu-ray presents terrific picture quality along with more than acceptable audio and a nice roster of supplements. I like the film and think

123. All The King's Men: Columbia Best Pictures Collection (1949)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: ... All the King’s Men fans face a potential dilemma. I think they’ll really like this fine new transfer, but they’ll have to decide if they want the other movies as well; obviously no one will spend $135 just for one flick. At least Men fans can rest assured that they’ll get a strong presentation of the film; it really does look quite good here. Starrin

124. Walt Disney Animation Collection: Volume I - Mickey And The Beanstalk (2009)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: In terms of the quality of its shorts, The Walt Disney Animation Collection Volume 1 succeeds. We get a nice set of cartoons here. Unfortunately, the disc fails to present these shorts in a satisfying way. Actually, most look and sound decent, but the horrible treatment given to “Mickey and the Beanstalk” saps the package of its value. Most fans will alr

125. The Great Ziegfeld (1936)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Though it drags at times and could have lost an hour of its running time, The Great Ziegfeld mostly presents a fun experience. Generally a light and plucky little romp, it boasts solid production values, fine acting, and enough clever moments to make it a winner. Starring William Powell, Myrna Loy. Warner, $19.98, 2/3/2004.

126. Blood Simple [Blu-Ray] (1984)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Kind of like Blood Simple itself. On some levels, the movie represents a strong first statement from the Coen brothers. On others, however, it suffers from a lack of cinematic development and falters. The Blu-ray comes with decent picture and audio as well as the occasionally amusing commentary. I’m sure fans will be happy with this release, though I sus

127. Following: Criterion Collection [Blu-Ray] (1998)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: I find it interesting to view early films from notable directors; they’re usually flawed, but they’re good to see for historical purposes. That goes for Christopher Nolan’s Following, a movie with ups and downs that still works, mainly due to a strong script. The Blu-ray provides acceptable picture and audio as well as some useful supplements. I’m happy

128. Brief Encounter: David Lean Directs Noël Coward (Criterion Collection) (1946)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Brief Encounter provides an early look at the career of David Lean, although one won't find any of the scope or grandeur of his later films here. Instead, Encounter remains a very small character piece that’s too mushy and sentimental for my liking. The DVD provides solid picture and audio along with a fairly nice roster of supplements. While the movie d

It meshes the romantic and gangster genres to create a lively and involving character drama. Starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis. Warner, $19.97, 1/25/2005.

130. The Sting: Legacy Series (1973)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: This two-DVD “Legacy Series” take on The Sting isn’t a slam-dunk, mostly because of the erratic visuals and skimpy extras. Nonetheless, I do recommend it. Folks who don’t own the old DVD should check it out, and it also would fare as a good upgrade. I don’t think it blows away the prior DVD, but it improves matters enough to merit a look.
