1. Super [Blu-Ray] (2011)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: As a story of a real-life loser who tries to redeem himself as a costumed crimefighter, Super has its moments, and a strong cast helps elevate it somewhat. Unfortunately, it attempts too much in terms of tone, as its mix of drama and comedy doesn’t mesh; that makes it unsatisfying in the end. The Blu-ray comes with very good picture and audio as well as

2. Hesher [Blu-Ray] (2010)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: A drama about grief that attempts to deliver something unusual, Hesher flops. It tends to seem aimless and doesn’t bother to explore its themes or characters well. The Blu-ray comes with pretty good picture and audio as well as a smattering of supplements. Hesher tries to add attitude to a sentimental genre but fails to do so in a compelling manner. Star

3. Permanent [Blu-Ray] (2017)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: A stab at period comedy, Permanent aspires to a level of cleverness and insight that it can’t achieve. Cartoony, silly and stupid, the movie lacks purpose and coherence. Starring Rainn Wilson, Patricia Arquette. Magnolia, $29.97, 4/3/2018.

4. Cooties [Blu-ray] (2015)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: I’ve seen good comedy-horror hybrids, but Cooties doesn’t belong to that club. Despite a handful of entertaining scenes, the movie lacks focus and wears out its welcome before long. Starring Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson. Lionsgate, $19.99, 12/1/2015.

5. The Meg [4K UHD] (2018)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: A moderate box office success, The Meg attempts to update the killer shark movie for the 21st century. Unfortunately, it gives us a slow, lackluster tale without the figurative bite it needs to pack a punch. Starring Jason Statham, Li Bingbing. Warner, $44.95, 11/13/2018.

7. Smurfs: The Lost Village [Blu-Ray] (2017)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Perhaps very young viewers will take pleasure from Smurfs: The Lost Village. However, I suspect most over the age of eight will find this to offer a dull, charm-free affair. Starring Demi Lovato, Jack McBrayer. Sony, $14.99, 7/11/2017.

8. Peep World [Blu-Ray] (2010)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: With a great cast and an interesting theme, Peep World could’ve been an absorbing character-based comedy/drama. Unfortunately, it’s an unsatisfying mix of genres with thin personalities and little cleverness. The Blu-ray provides generally good picture, acceptable audio and minor supplements. Chalk this one up as a letdown that doesn’t satisfy. Starring

9. Monsters vs. Aliens [Blu-Ray] (2009)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: As much as I like the ideas behind Monsters vs. Aliens, the movie itself leaves me curiously cold. I think it musters passable entertainment but it lacks much charm or excitement. Starring Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen. DreamWorks, $29.98, 11/30/2010.

10. Jerry and Marge Go Large [Blu-Ray] (2022)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Thanks to a good cast and a breezy attitude, Jerry and Marge Go Large becomes a reasonably likable light character piece. Nothing about it excels, but it keeps us entertained across its 96 minutes. Starring Bryan Cranston, Annette Bening. Paramount, $24.99, 11/15/2022.
