21. Ben-Hur [Blu-Ray] (2016)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: An attempt to update a tale of religion and redemption, 2016’s Ben-Hur flops. Despite good intentions, the movie lacks compelling characters, vivid action, or real emotion. Starring Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell. Paramount, $39.99, 12/13/2016.

22. Yankee Doodle Dandy: Special Edition (1942)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: On paper, Yankee Doodle Dandy sounded like it might offer a maudlin and sappy piece of nostalgia. In reality, however, the movie proved quite winning, as it gave us a peppy and amusing take on the life of a famous composer. The film seemed well executed across the board. The DVD also appeared stellar, as it presented excellent picture, decent sound, and

23. The Furies: Criterion Collection [Blu-Ray] (1950)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Not many Westerns feature female protagonists, so that emphasis makes The Furies something different. The flick doesn’t just rely on this gimmick to create interest, as it gives us a solidly crafted and well-acted film that consistently satisfies. Starring Barbara Stanwyck, Walter Huston. Criterion, $39.95, 4/20/2021.

24. The Constant Gardener (2005)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: It seems a little inappropriate to refer to The Constant Gardener as a “thriller”, since that genre usually goes with a lot more action. The moniker might sell this flick short, since it pigeonholes it more than I’d like. Gardener includes elements of a thriller but expands them in a human manner that allows it to become something more special. Starring

25. The Devil and Daniel Webster: Criterion Collection (1941)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: At its best, The Devil and Daniel Webster provides an entertaining fable. However, it takes way too long to get to its point and suffers from poor acting by the actor who spends the most time on screen. Starring Edward Arnold, Walter Huston. Criterion, $39.95, 9/30/2003.

26. Annie [4K UHD] (1982)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Annie becomes a dud because the movie itself offers an insufferably cute and cloying concoction. How so much talent got wasted on this mess remains a mystery to me. Starring Aileen Quinn, Albert Finney. Sony, $164.99, 10/25/2022.

27. Orgazmo: Unrated Special Edition (1998)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: I don’t mind the nonsensical plot of Orgazmo or its flabby acting. I don’t mind that it’s a true “high concept” flick. I do mind that it’s simply not funny. Orgazmo evokes a couple of chuckles - mostly via Stone’s goofy performance as Dave - but never goes beyond that. For a movie from the South Park guys, it’s surprisingly dull. Starring Trey Parker, Di

28. Annie (1982)

29. Chinatown (1974)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Chinatown qualifies as a great movie, and one that deserves its status as a classic. The DVD provides mediocre picture and good audio plus a couple of minor extras. Though not a stellar DVD, Chinatown is a terrific film that definitely warrants your attention. Starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway. Paramount, $12.98, 11/23/1999.

30. Chinatown: Special Collector's Edition (1974)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: This is an easy recommendation for folks who don’t have the old release but I think it’s very worthwhile as a double-dip as well. The new extras are pretty interesting and the picture quality marks a good upgrade. Since Paramount priced the DVD at a dirt-cheap $14.99, this is a no brainer; go ahead and grab this one ASAP. Starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Du
