21. Gangs of New York [Blu-Ray] (2002)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Although Gangs of New York won’t go down as Martin Scorsese’s worst film, it also falls far from the top of his pile. The movie presents a handful of enthralling sequences but suffers from a weak script, a messy third act, and a mix of other problems that undercut its strengths. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis. Miramax, $14.98, 2/2/2010.

22. New York, New York: 30th Anniversary Edition (1977)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: If you want to own a DVD Of New York and don’t have the old one, you may as well get this one. It offers the same picture and audio but adds a few moderately interesting supplements. I wouldn’t push for a “double dip”, though. If MGM had improved the non-anamorphic transfer, then it might warrant your attention, but a smattering of new extras don’t merit

23. After Hours: Criterion Collection [4K UHD] (1985)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: A stylistic stretch for Martin Scorsese, After Hours does not succeed. It presents occasional moments of dark mirth, but it plods too much and seems generally dull and pointless. Starring Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette. Criterion, $49.95, 7/11/23.

25. Shutter Island [Blu-Ray] (2010)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Though I admire Martin Scorsese’s willingness to stretch his cinematic boundaries, Shutter Island indicates that he lacks much aptitude for psychological thrillers. Scorsese makes too much of the film’s subtext obvious so the end result lacks nuance or impact. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo. Paramount, $15.00, 6/8/2010.

26. The Irishman: Criterion Collection [Blu-Ray] (2019)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Given its cast and crew, The Irishman comes with huge expectations, but it can’t live up to those hopes. Too long and too disjointed, the movie disappoints. Starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino. Criterion, $39.95, 11/24/2020.

28. New York, New York [Blu-Ray] (1977)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Is New York, New York an homage, a parody, or a reconstruction of classic movie musicals? That’s a good question, and not one that the flick adequately answers. It includes all of those elements but mushes them together into a plodding piece with little substance or entertainment value. The Blu-ray brings us generally positive picture and audio along wit

30. Raging Bull: Special Edition (1980)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Despite my lack of real affection for Raging Bull, I recognize its strengths and recommend it. Should folks who own the prior DVD upgrade to this new one? Definitely. Not only does it improve on the original’s picture and sound, but also it adds a terrific collection of supplements. The new Raging Bull is a stellar release that finally does justice to th
